Jesus Heals a Man at the Pool of Bethesda Bible Passage – John 5:1-13

The Healing at the Pool

John 5:1-13 (NIV):

  1. Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals.
  2. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades.
  3. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed.
  4. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
  5. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
  6. “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
  7. Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”
  8. At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

Religious Leaders’ Reaction

  1. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,
  2. and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”
  3. But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’”
  4. So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?” The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

Lessons from the Healing at Bethesda

1. Jesus Sees Our Suffering

The man at Bethesda had suffered for 38 years, likely feeling forgotten and hopeless. But Jesus saw him, knew his condition, and acted with compassion. This shows that God is always aware of our struggles and cares deeply for us.

2. Faith and Obedience Bring Healing

When Jesus told the man to get up and walk, he obeyed immediately—and was healed! Faith in Jesus’ words leads to transformation. Even when healing doesn’t come the way we expect, trusting in Christ brings spiritual renewal.

3. Jesus’ Power is Greater Than Religious Traditions

The Jewish leaders were more concerned about Sabbath laws than celebrating the miracle. This reveals how human traditions can sometimes blind people to God’s work. Jesus demonstrated that God’s grace and mercy are more important than religious legalism.

4. Jesus Calls Us to Take Action

Jesus asked the man, “Do you want to get well?” This question reminds us that spiritual and emotional healing often requires a response from us. We must choose to trust God, take steps of faith, and walk in obedience.
